I started a new project this weekend. I have long wanted to build Hannu Vartiala's Light Sculling Trainer, but it has been further down the list of designs I want to build. But I really need to lose some weight, and I liked rowing on the crew team at UF, so I decided to give it a go.
I will be trying out several things with this build. First is to use some Polyester Boat resin I have on hand from the defunct trimaran project. I asked around at the Duckworks yahoo group forum and got mixed opinions on it. Since I have it on hand I am going to give it a shot to stitch and glue the hulls with it.
The second thing I want to try is a cedar strip deck. I figure that the decks are short on this design without any compound curves so I will give it a shot.
On his site, Hannu gives very complete instructions, but the measurements are in mm, so I loaded the .hul file he provides into the Carlson Hull designer software and printed out nesting in inches.
For materials, other than the aforementioned polyester resin, I have picked up some 5.2 mm underlayment from Lowe's. Again this is a often disputed material for boat building. Some swear by it, others at it. I built a PK78 from www.bateau.com with it 3 years ago and it is still going strong after some rough use. It varies greatly from sheet to sheet, so I took some time to get the best of the stack with thicker outer plies and no visible voids. I am going to strip the deck with wood from a pallet we recieved from New Zealand. It is nice, close grained wood that looks a bit like a yellow cedar. So i may get some red cedar to accent it from Lowe's.
