WHAT WE DO

National Description:

The Surfrider Foundation is a non profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our worlds oceans, waves and beaches.

Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 80 Chapters world wide.

Suncoast Chapter proudly upholds Surfriders mission statement on the western Gulf coast of Florida.  Our membership territory begins as far north as the marshy coastline of Citrus County to the emeral green waters of  Marco Island in the deep southwest point of our vast state.

Established in 2007, Suncoast Chapter beach activists keep Florida beaches cleaner in many ways.  For example:

In Pinellas County:

Suncoast held the "El Bano" Demonstration at John's Pass, Madeira Beach, Florida in support of the Clean Oceans Act 2008 which passed this Spring!

In Lee County:

Our SW FL sub-chapter pushed for the Fertilizer Ordinance which passed in May of this year. Kudos to Vincent, Darlene, and crew for their efforts!

In Hillsborough County:

SCSF joined the University of Tampa Surf Club to clean Davis Island, a little slice of sunshine in the heart of Tampa.

In Sarasota County:

Our South of the Bridge sub-chapter got us involved in the passing of the Fertilizer Ordinance for the city of Sarasota. And the chapter participates in Manatee County's Adopt-a-Shore program.

Kudos to Amanda and team for all your efforts!

SCSF enjoys aligning with many not for profit education programs and often can be seen at community environmental functions at parks and schools throughout the western Gulf coast region.

So look for us out in the community and on our beaches!

In May 2008, SCSF launched its Free Upham Campaign.

The northern most point of St. Pete Beach has always been a historical Florida Gulf surf break.  By most local accounts it used to be one of the best surf breaks on the Florida Gulf Coast.  Today, its an eyesore, dubbed "Frankenstein Beach" due to the experimental project using geo-textile t-groins.
