A little bit of work at a time is my mantra now. It is a simple build, and I have sttarted to hit a groove with it. If I find an half hour or so, I go putter. That is the nice part about the build stage I'm at. I guess I'm pretty intimidated by epoxy, and I always feel like I need a 4 hour block of time to do it, so it is easy to put off. This morning I used the pull saw to trim the bow deck flush. As I sat there contemplating the project, the name hit me...
![]() Blue Note, that is the name. The blue note is the note that jazz and blues players hit that tugs you soul. Musicians know it as a flat 3rd, 5th, or 7th. Blue Note records was one of the most influential jazz recording labels too. Usually the structure of a jazz or blues song consists of a head, or the main tune or theme, followed by improvisation over the basic chord structure. Well, build as I build this boat, I have improved quite a few things over the basic structure of the Hannu's Vartialia's Light Sculling Trainer. So Blue Note fits her well I think!
![]() I am a big fan of this saw, it is sharp and easy to use. I made some mistakes at first when I tried to trim from the top and cut into the hull sides a bit on the starboard side. But those wobbles will easily sand out and can be faired. I eventually found that if I flipped the hull and angled the saw back I could control the cut nicely and get a smoother trim. The port side took a quarter of the time and I was able to use the same technique to trim closer on the starboard side.
![]() This shot shows the angle I eventually found. With some wrist twist I could keep the cuts quite close. I am glad I didn't try to use a powr tool in this application. More and more in this build I find I do better work when I use hand tools.
![]() Now maybe if I cleaned up my workspace I could do even better!
