Whew! the last makor structural piece is in place. I have been creeping along on this project for more than a year. That is not to say I have been working on it, at my current estimate, I only have about 20 hours of work in this hull.
![]() I used a slightly different method on the rear deck than the front. This time I dry fit the 2 foot by 6 foot sheet of 5.2mm luan underlayment and used a marker to trace around the deck. Then I cut it to shape with my circular saw. I just did a rouh cut, just outside the lines I drew. fast and easy compared to trying to trim with the handsaw after the glue had dried. Then I used a scrap 1x2 as a straight edge to check the bevel of the inwale. The high spots were leveled off with my handy random orbit sander. I finished up the session by gluing the rear deck down and making sure it had plenty of weight for a tight bond. About 45 minutes of work all told. I brought the hull into the front yard before gluing to get some shots with the rear deck dry fitted.
I checked out Hannu's Boatyard, where I downloaded the design from, and saw that a guy in Arkansas had build one of these as a kayak and launched recently. Jason did a nice job on it, and launched it into icy cold water. He was kind enough to post pics and video for us too! We have emailed back and forth and I appreciate his encouragement!
