This cedar strip canoe project is so much more fun working with a buddy. I know I have said that before, but it bears repeating. We only work on it once a week, more if we have time, but it is a blast. We drink a couple beers, listen to some good music and generally shoot the shit. Last night we had the Clash and some mix CD from 2002. 2002 had some sucky music actually.
We finished getting the molds mounted on the second strongback. When we finished the first one last week we had to try putting a strip on. We are using Skip Johnson's EasyB design from Duckworks Magazine, and there are no true build instructions, just a basic description and some pictures. The images show the mold frames made out of pegboard with strips held by rubberbands. The book I originally read on strip planking shows 3/4 MDF and staples, so this is quite different. But hey it is an experiment. We found it difficult to align the shear strip (the one that becomes the top edge, or part of the gunnel) with the marks on the form using just the rubberbands. Finally we figured out that we could hammer small tacks into the edge of the molds and the right height for the shear on each station, and then rubberband the strip on. It worked great.
So far, almost 2 months of work, about 2 hours a week with one 4 hour session last sunday, and we have two strongbacks with molds set on station, the shearline marked... and 1, yes 1 strip in place. Chad's wife Randi has been teasing us the whole time saying all we do is drink beer and make a mess. At least now we have something that vaguely resembles a couple canoes!
